People say that we go to the theatre to escape routine. But when your routine is war — escape is impossible. War entered some theatres in 2014, others in 2022. In some, it changed the poster; in others, it pierced the roof and destroyed the stage.

We speak with four theatre leaders about the particular challenges of creating productions and running theatres in circumstances where everyone on stage and off can be affected by loss, is under threat, and yet, for some reason, keeps returning to the theatre.
